The Watchung Arts Center's "Powerful Woman of Song" Series

Proudly presents...

Julie Gold

in Concert!

You've all heard Julie's mega hit, "From a Distance," recorded by Bette Midler.  Come meet her in person and enjoy her stories about how music (and that song in particular) changed her life!

Sample her music by clicking on either of the two highlighted links below.

About Julie Gold....

Julie Gold was born and raised in Philadelphia. She started piano lessons at age 6. All throughout her childhood, the minute she heard a song she wanted to make music!

She moved to NYC in 1978, after graduating from Temple University, and "played in nearly EVERY establishment that had a piano in all 5 boroughs while working as a secretary at HBO." Then in the mid-80's, her dear friend, Singer/Songwriter/Comedian Christine Lavin, sent Julie's song, FROM A DISTANCE, to touring singer/songwriter, Nanci Griffeth, as a birthday present, never thinking she'd want to record it. Nanci Griffith LOVED the song and recorded it in 1987, thereby introducing the song to the world. A few years later, in 1990, Bette Midler recorded FROM A DISTANCE and my life forever changed!"

Julie GoldFROM A DISTANCE which won the Grammy for Song of the Year in 1991.

That song has since received close to 4 million air plays:
   • It has been recited into the Congressional Record (by Senator Barbara Boxer).
   • It has been recorded internationally and translated into many languages.
   • It has been illustrated as a Children’s Book and mass- produced in Music Boxes.
   • It has been quoted in books, calendars and greeting cards.
   • It was used as the wake-up call for astronauts in the Mir Space Station the very first time the Americans hooked up with the Russians in outer space.

A wide range of recording artists have covered it, singers from Jewel to Cliff Richard to The African Children’s Choir to Judy Collins to The Byrds to Donna Summer--just to name a few.

Nanci Griffith, the first to record FROM A DISTANCE, has also covered Gold’s songs HEAVEN, SOUTHBOUND TRAIN, GOOD NIGHT NEW YORK, and MOUNTAIN OF SORROW. Other artists who have covered Julie Gold songs include Patti LaBelle, Patti LuPone, Lea Salonga and Andrea Marcovicci.

You might recognize Gold’s Emmy Nominated lyric WE’RE 4 NEW YORK which ran on the local NBC affiliate for years. You might also recognize her song THANKS TO YOU which was featured in the motion picture ANDRE, and her song DREAM LOUD which was featured in the motion picture UNFAITHFUL, starring Richard Gere. DREAM LOUD is also a favorite song of The Girl Scouts of America. Gold delights in the fact that she was paid in Girl Scout cookies for that transaction.

Julie Gold now lives in Greenwich Village with her partner, their 3 cats and MANY fish tanks!!!! Every morning she walks along the Hudson River to her gym, where she blissfully swims in a gorgeous pool next to the river as the ships go by.

Coffee With Conscience Concert Series

Ahrre Maros is the owner of Ahrre's Coffee Roastery in Westfield & the Fair Trade Coffee Company on line. He has been presenting live musical events since 1992, when he first opened the Common Ground Cafe in Summit. The Cafe is gone now, but Ahrre continues bringing Professional Touring Musical Artists to the area for the benefit of the local community and several local Charities.

Currently, Ahrre presents the Coffee With Conscience Concert Series in Westfield, which is a Seven-show Series which acts as a fund-raiser—raising much needed funds for worthy causes—while providing the participants with the opportunity to attend quality performance events near their homes, providing an audience with a cultural experience, providing artists with a venue to display their talents, and generally strengthening the local community by bringing a group of people together for an evening of music in a comfortable setting.
